
Overview
Effective catchment management depends on the ability to consistently assess environmental condition, compare outcomes across landscapes, and evaluate the effectiveness of management actions. However, differences in assessment methods and reporting approaches can make it difficult for agencies and decision-makers to compare catchment health or prioritise investment.
This project developed a common framework for assessing catchment condition by identifying meaningful environmental indicators and designing practical tools to support consistent, evidence-based evaluation across multiple catchments.
The Challenge
Catchments are complex systems where land use, hydrology, biodiversity, water quality, and human activities interact over large spatial scales. While a wealth of environmental data exists, it is often collected using different methods, making comparisons between catchments difficult.
The challenge was to develop a framework that could bring together diverse environmental information into a consistent assessment process. The framework needed to provide regulators, land managers, and decision-makers with a common basis for evaluating catchment condition while supporting assessment of the costs, benefits, risks, and opportunities associated with different management scenarios.
Our Approach
The project combined ecological expertise, spatial analysis, and stakeholder engagement to develop a practical and scientifically defensible assessment framework.
The work involved:

- Evaluating available datasets for consistency, accessibility, and suitability.
